BYD Files “U8L” Trademark in China: Extended Full-Size Luxury SUV Set to Enter Market

On May 27, 2025, IPR Laoliu reported through a search on the China Trademark Office website that BYD Co., Ltd. submitted an application for the “U8L” trademark in China on April 28, 2025. The trademark, classified under Class 12 (Transportation Tools) with registration number 85011037, is currently in the status of “awaiting substantive examination.” This move underscores BYD’s strategic expansion within its premium “Yangwang” series and signals the imminent market launch of the extended version of its flagship model, the Yangwang U8—the U8L.

The “U8L” model linked to this trademark application was unveiled at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show. Positioned as a full-size executive luxury SUV, the U8L targets high-end consumer markets. Compared to the current Yangwang U8 luxury edition, the U8L boasts a wheelbase extended by 200 mm, a total length of 5,400 mm, and a six-seat configuration, further enhancing space and comfort for users.

By registering the “U8L” trademark, BYD not only paves the legal path for the new model’s launch but also strengthens its competitive edge in the premium new energy vehicle (NEV) market. Since its debut, the Yangwang brand has established a high-end image through the U8’s million-yuan pricing and cutting-edge technology. The introduction of the U8L will diversify BYD’s product portfolio, catering to niche segments—particularly users seeking luxury business travel solutions.
